September 4, Central Pennsylvania

Jeff took off early and headed up the highway, pretty much bypassing Clearfield. He asked me to go get some pics from the downtown area. I have to say that so far I think Clearfield wins the prize for the number of historical markers! There is a beautiful river that flows through town, also. The county courthouse was not nearly as grand as most of them. The old mid-rise hotel across the street really eclipsed it.

The 9-11 Memorial outside the courthouse doors.

Opposite the 9-11 memorial, the Ten Commandments.

The hotel.

Stone work on the hotel.

After leaving Clearfield, it was little town after little town again. I think that the towns are getting a bit closer together, and maybe even more dense. And of course, they all seem to have a veteran's memorial and volunteer fire department.

Jeff has found more stuff ON the road! This time, he picked up a nice set of tools for us. And a new plate! I wish the rest of the service was around.... Oh, and he found a nice snack!

I bought a bunch of apples that looked like this at a roadside stand. Wish I'd gotten more! They were delish!

Jeff may be suffering a bit out there, but there is still nothing wrong with his powers of observation! He notices the funniest things sometimes!

Of course, some of the things he notices are historical. They have these markers for so many things out here!

Another stars and stripes pallet.

The drive-in's are actually operating out here.

Lumber company.....

Yard decor.

More yard decor!

One of the little towns we skirted was Philipsburg. The first thing you came to was this really pretty creek. Then, just in a random spot on the side of the road, a war memorial. And it was a pretty good one, too! Even fire and police were included!

This water was the clearest we've seen in a while!

Please don't be bored with our house pics! We seem to find so many that are just cool. I cannot imagine the cost of restoring one of the old ones, but it appears worth it in the long run to have a house that some random guy going across the country will take a pic of!

The mountains are really gorgeous! It seems like there is another great view, or great shot, just around every bend in the road.  What an amazing country we have!

And something we have not included for a bit. Simply because I forget! Jeff makes an effort to get a really good, or unusual flower of the day pic, and I forget to post them many times.

Although we had a few bumps along the way today, we ended up making it to State College. I had no idea that meant Penn State until I saw the signs! This was an actual city, where there were regular stores such as Target and AT&T. We actually had to increase our data yet again! At least we can drop back when we get home. Apparently, our uploading videos every day really uses a lot of data! Even when we try to use WIFI, we have still used too much!

Anyway, surprisingly, there are no campgrounds around the State College area. So, checking the book, I find there to be a couple of Walmarts, one of which is right on our route through town! We get there and pull into the parking lot, which is small and shared by a lot of adjacent stores, only to discover there are signs on almost every pole indicating parking is for 2 hours only! And the lot is close to full! We usually see other RV's hanging out, too, as late as we end up arriving, but there were none. The only recourse was to trot on over to the other Walmart. It was several miles east, which put us off the route, as well. But we needed somewhere to camp for the night. So, off we went. Holy moly, when we got there, there were at least a dozen other RV's, mostly big motorhomes, hanging out in the parking lot! Most of them had one little area, they were all lined up, and had their chairs and stuff out on the lot having a party! Jeff found out later that they come in for the football games early, and camp there all week. We were told it happens all the time. I guess someone would be smart to open an RV park, hmmmm????

We went to dinner at a local place there, Quaker Lube and Steak or something like that. There will not be a repeat of that mistake! Service was incredibly slow, the food was way too salty, and then they rushed us when they were not busy. She had his dessert out before he finished his meal. Cardinal mistake! And, charged us for a hot tea that we didn't order. If she hadn't been so insistent that she must have accidentally hit the button, I would not have thought much about it. But I really think that was done on purpose! I've heard of that happening. Ok, rant over.

Here is the mailbox of the day!
