September 21, Cape Cod

We pulled out of the Walmart in Tewskbury with the goal of driving to the end of Cape Cod. Little did I know how long that would actually take! I was so tired at the end of the day from being in that drivers seat all day. And of course we picked the scenic, rather than the fast, route.

Traveling up highway 28 took us through towns. A number of towns. However, in only one town did I actually make a wrong turn, or probably missed the highway turning, and ended up on the main drag. It was Chatham. A very cute, charming, quaint town that was FULL of people. I guess it was a weekend, and maybe one of the last remaining great weather weekends. Or maybe it is always like that. I will say this. Do not ever attempt to take an RV up that street! There were pedestrians everywhere, but the worst thing was that the street was not wide enough for 2 lanes of traffic and the parking on both sides of the street. In fact, there was not room from the curb to the outside of the parking spot for many of the cars, and they just stuck out. I had to just stop a few times and let the car go by on my left. It was hair-raising, to say the least! But, we made it through and found the highway again.

As we made our way out the skinny little spit of land, we kept noticing a sign stuck in the ground here and there that was talking about a scallop fest. It was at the Cape Cod County Fairground. We decided to stop in. It sounded like fun, and we both love scallops. Of course it was lunch time, too! We nearly gave up finding it, but eventually ran right into the traffic waiting to turn in. The parking guys directed us into an area and we were set. It was only $6 to get in, but if you wanted scallops, you had to buy the dinner for $16 at the gate. We decided not to. The fair was small, but had some cool stuff to look at. Jeff had a couple things to eat, and I got a local apple from someone passing them out. It was fun looking at all the little crafty things, and there was a live band. So it was a pleasant hour or so.

Long line to get in the gate.

After leaving there, we headed once again east toward the end of the cape. We passed a couple of interesting things along the way that we were able to get a pic of.

This was worth a big loop around!

Traffic circles. Hate them. Especially in a big,
slow RV.

We didn't see a real one on the cape, but there was this....

And a windmill!

A bunch of cool metal art.
We took a couple of pics along the way, and it was interesting to watch the fog move in. It never got too thick to see, but I wondered if there is fog here a lot.

Yes, there were boats out there....

Finally, we found the end. It really looked like what I sort of expected the rest of the drive to look like. Lots of sand dunes and water. However, we never saw any of that until reaching the end.

Big, interesting homes.

Beach....

Dunes....

Dunes....

Dunes and water.

It was quite beautiful! I saw many people walking on the trail there, but we didn't get on it. We went on in towards Provincetown, otherwise known as Ptown. It is a very old town, with lots of history.

Jeff jumped out to take some pics and I drove to circle back around and get him. That was interesting! This little old town had some very narrow streets, lots of one-ways, and tons of pedestrians! But, I made it back. We decided, since the town was so cute, we might park and walk around, maybe eat dinner, since it was dinner time. I really didn't think I would find a place to park, but I did, and only a short walk to the pier and shops. We found a cool little place to eat right on the water just at the end of the pier.

Decisions, decisions.....

View of the pier.

View of the beach.

Selfie on the patio.

We were soon forced inside due to the rain. However, we were lucky. By the time we finished, the rain was not quite as bad. So, we made our way across the street to an ice cream place, where Jeff got a dish of ice cream. Once he was done with that, we were able to walk back to the RV without getting wet!

The ice cream shop.
On the way back to the RV, we found this little spot where someone had made a cute little sand dune village.

We had our sights on an RV park there on the cape, in Eastham. It was full dark and raining as we were making our way back down the cape. We found this interesting vineyard that had a wine cask water tower, and it was even lit for us to get a pic of!

It was quite late, about 9:30, when we reached the RV park. The guy was in the office! I guess he was really just doing some odds and ends, because when I went in to see if we could get a spot for the night, he was less than enthusiastic. He hinted several times that the office closed a couple hours ago. Not sure what his issue was. Guess he didn't want to bother. He eventually ran me off with his attitude. This was the Atlantic Coast RV Park. I would give them a wide berth.

Then we stumbled on a real jewel! The Pinewood Lodge Campground in Plymouth, MA. It is an amazing place, very large and quite pretty. And the guy met us at the office, led us to a site, and told me to drop by the office in the morning to take care of things. That is the way you create customer loyalty!

And with all the interesting things we passed along the way, we only saw one Mailbox of the Day worthy of posting!
