We got a marginally late start this morning. I actually slept until 9:30, and woke up with a headache. I had to wake Mickie up as she had a flight out, and we hurried to get everything together and ready to check out of the RV parking lot. We were trying to figure out how to get Mickie to LaGuardia, drive all the way around or have her take public transportation. So, we asked the guy at the front desk when we checked out, and he said absolutely public transportation would be quicker. He gave us the best way, and we took Mickie to the PATH station, where she could cross the river back into NY. He said that the traffic for us driving, especially since we couldn't drive through the city, would take forever. I believe him, considering the traffic that we had to traverse getting out of the dense population areas on the Jersey side. Apparently Mickie had no problem, except that her flight was delayed to the point that she missed her connection at DFW. She was interested to see that Ted Cruz was on her flight. I told her not to talk politics! Liberal left meets tea party??
As I was driving in a generally northerly direction to get away from the city, we began discussing where to go. I'm thinking meander up towards Maine, maybe get some lobsta.... then Jeff tells me about a marathon in upstate NY tomorrow. Apparently his running friend, Diane, came from that area, and let him know about it. She was up there to run, from Nashville, and also for her mother's birthday. We checked out the website, and he decided to run it. Course correction to Albany!
The drive up there was really nice. Even though we were on a tollway. Once you get away from the City, it is just beautiful up there! And we stopped at one of those service areas, that has gas and food and stuff on the tollways, where Jeff got some ice cream. I guess planning for the calories to run the measly 26.2! I was really excited to see a farm stand there with several different types of local apples. I have really been loving the local apples! I think my favorite is called Ginger Gold.
The marathon/ultra/10K/5K was in John Boyd Thacher State Park, and they did have a camp ground there. We were somewhat surprised to find that there were no hook ups, but figured we could get water, dump, and only paid for 1 night. It smelled fantastic up there! To top it off, many campers had their fire rings going, so we had that great campfire smell.
Finding the park was easy. |
Checking in was not. They even wanted to see proof of vaccination on the dogs. First time all across the country! |
They had a welcoming bear, which Zada had to check out. |
This guy checked in after us. His camper is really cool! |
Checking out the view where the race will start. |
And, lo and behold, we actually found the most awesome Mailbox of the Day while on our way there!
