Since we were simply on the side of the road in a piece of
road that had been barricaded off, just off the highway, Jeff was able to head
out early, and got a great picture of the sunrise!
And the road ahead looked pretty much like it has the past
couple of days. I don't think it is going to change much, either. It is
interesting. We are halfway on our journey, and I have been through some
amazing areas that I would love to spend more time in. Then there are those
other areas. The ones that I want to just blow through as fast as we possibly
can! The mosquitoes, the biting flies, the heat, the ants, the huge
grasshoppers, and the monotony of the view, can be a real inspiration! Jeff is
beginning to be worried that we can't get to NYC in time, and with the a/c
issue, that might be true. I sure hope we make it without having to drive the
end, and backtrack. That would be a real bummer!
Jeff continues to find stuff on the road... for instance, he
found someone's entire cassette tape collection! And some little girls little dolly. He saved
it from being crushed by some random car out there!
We went through a couple of dot on the map towns, that
really had nothing to offer us. But, we pushed on to Kit Carson. I really
needed ice badly, as we go through a lot since it is pretty hot out there.
There was no convenience store in Kit Carson! It was a fairly decent sized
small town, but not a lot of commerce. So I stopped in at a little restaurant
to ask. She said that they usually sold ice, but their machine was on the
blink. However, she did suggest that I try the little liquor store that was on
Main street. So, off I went. Sure enough, I was able to get some there. Back
out to support Jeff I went!
Once he actually arrived at town, it was nearly quitting
time, and dinner time. We stopped at the little diner just inside town, but
didn't actually eat dinner there. I had already thawed something to cook. Jeff
had pie. A la mode. It looked amazing, but didn't last long!
Almost didn't get a pic! |
We didn't have dinner here.... |
I really needed to dump the tanks, as we had been self
reliant the night before. It is not common to make it 2 nights, considering we
both shower every day, and wash dishes. So I had asked the lady working at the
liquor store if she knew of a place that had an RV dump. Well, she really
didn't, although there was a little RV park just at the end of town. Really? I
drove all over looking for ice, and totally missed this! Maybe because there
were no RV's there? So after pie, I drove on down there while Jeff wandered
through town, taking pics. Sure enough, there was a little old RV park with
full hook-ups! Not only would we still have 4G with which to make a hotspot,
but we would have electricity! We could run the fan (since there is no working
a/c) and hope to be a bit cooler. This evening was working out much better than
the night before.
After dinner, the wind began to pick up. Thankfully the
clouds had really helped out with the heat, at least by taking the direct sun
off you. However, we weren't really looking forward to a storm. I walked over
to take a look at the sky, it was a very weird color. My only thought at that
point was crap, we are just 25 miles or so from Kansas, and living in a
trailer! And I thought this definitely looked like a wall cloud to the west. We
alternated from still to quite windy, had a few smatterings of rain, then it
seemed to go right around us. Probably a good thing. It cooled things off, but
did take away our breeze. The breeze is very important when the a/c is not
working!
So, with all of that adventure for the day, Jeff still found
a flower of the day, and a mailbox of the day. The mailbox was really
interesting, although it was not actually in service. It was laying over
horizontally in a pile of stuff. But it was clear what it was, and the little
farm at the base of it is quite cute.
