July 16, Stopped by Storms

Jeff got an early start this morning. We were parked near the Green Mountain Preserve, in a gravel lot. This day was all about moving down the road. But, in the end, due to a pretty big thunderstorm that dropped dime sized hail in Silverthorne, it was a shorter day than we had planned.

This may also have been the same day, or part of the system, that dropped so much rain in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs that they had severe flash flooding and a mud slide that closed the highway we eventually planned on using.

But thankfully, we had seen some great scenery on our way into the Summit County area. This is the area with so many ski resorts. We went through Silverthorne, Dillon, Frisco, all right in the same area.

And as we were staying the night before at the Green Mountain Preserve, we encountered the Blue River not far ahead. It was a very cool little river, with lots of sound, and just wound down next to the highway we were on for quite some time. Actually, all the way into Silverthorne, where we were stopped by the storm for a while.

We looked for a camping spot, and particularly one with a dump, for a while. There were some primitive campgrounds near Dillon Lake, but nothing with a dump. Finally, we stopped and asked a guy that had a Texas license plate at the primitive place, and he told us where to go.

We found the dump site, and ended up in a Walmart parking lot. It rained pretty much all night. We did take a short hop over to the Whole Foods Market, in order to use their WIFI. We thought it was really cool to have a table inside of a ski cable car!

Then back through the rain to the Walmart parking lot in Frisco! Another interesting thing about Colorado, and many of the more trendy towns we have been through. The pot places are all around! Many are just "medicinal use", but not all. I figure that if I leave Colorado without buying any, my BFF Mickie Dye will take my 70's card away!

Although we got no mailbox shot this day, we did find these very unique bicycle racks at a local park while we were looking for a dump site!
