August 23, Logansport

You have to understand that there is sometimes just no good name for a day on this journey. Sometimes I just have to pick something... and there may be only a mention of it! The days are running together a lot, and if I wait too long to write the blog, I have to struggle to remember even what happened. I hope that the originality has not fallen off so much that many of you are losing interest.

Today started out in the CVS parking lot. Jeff got up and left pretty early, after his trip to McDonald's for breakfast. Me, I slept in a bit. Yesterday really tired me out for some reason! I drove more miles than normal, too, so maybe that was part of it. Once I woke up, I was surprised to look out the window and see that the CVS was open and there were lots of cars in the parking lot! I guess they didn't mind us being there too much. Got my shower, some coffee at McDonald's, and spent a little time emailing the news papers and TV stations ahead. So far, I've gotten no response, but it is Saturday! After sleeping in a bit, my mood had improved quite a bit. I will say that I will be very glad to reach the end of this journey!

Jeff took a turn around downtown Delphi on his way out of town. His comment about the city? He felt like everything was square. All the buildings, etc. When I look at the pics, I see a lot of rounded bay windows and things. It is interesting how we both can see something so totally different!

Really a nice little town.

Interesting fire station!

I caught up with him down the road, and we started leap-frogging the miles away. It was a hot day, but there were some clouds helping out a bit. Around lunchtime, I found a nice side road, and got the grill out to cook the chicken that we didn't cook last night, due to the late hour. Have you ever seen an RV on the side of the road with a grill out, smoking? Well, the lady at the corner where I was decided to come out and see if I needed help. Maybe help with the cooking? Jeff is a better griller than I am! Anyway, her name is Glenda, and she told me her husband is a firefighter in Logansport, the next town. So cool! So, when we got to the Logansport "exit", Jeff and I separated again, and I went into town for pics, and hopefully to find the fire station where Glenda's husband, Gary Chambers, worked. And, guess what? I was successful! I stumbled across the Logansport Central Fire Station, and went up to the door with one of our cards (which are fast disappearing!). Once I began talking to him, he knew exactly who I was and what I was doing! Cool! Glenda had already called him to tell him all about us, and they had already looked Support For Firefighters up on the internet! We chatted for a bit, but I didn't stay long. They had had a busy day so far, Fill the Boot and a parade, and then later on they had to go judge a rib cook off! That is something that I have to say I do not ever remember anyone having the pleasure of doing at the Dallas Fire Department! Small towns are so much different.

By the way, this was a truly beautiful fire station, inside and out! Apparently their city government puts a little effort into taking care of their public servants.

Thanks, Gary and Glenda! It was great meeting both of you!

Logansport was a nice town, a bit larger than many of the small towns, but with some very nice old buildings. Their Masonic Lodge puts them all to shame!

And Gary told me where to find an RV dump just up the road from the station. Going that way, I found some great homes, but didn't really have the time to stop. I knew Jeff would be running out of juice on his phone, so I was hurrying. I still didn't get back to him before it died..... at least I had no trouble finding him. He was running up the highway he hates. But I don't think he hates it so bad, now, as this part of it has huge 7-8 foot shoulders, even though it is a divided 4 lane road.

Along this new road, just outside of Delphi, there was this large suspension bridge, just parked next to the road. Apparently it is a historic bridge. And it now goes to nowhere.

He found a couple of things on the side of the road today, also. New road, new shoulder, still finding stuff. It's amazing.

Someone took a bite and that was that.

I bet someone is missing dolly tonight!

And her brother is missing his little toy car!

There has been a lot of greenery since we have left the cornfields. The terrain has changed a lot. The road ahead has a different look! Finally!

There is a possibility that some of this is due to all the rain they have had here.

But, there is still the occasional flower on the side of the road. These two seem like they are very optimistic, and holding on for dear life!

He also found a beer can bonanza! I have often thought that if I had a dollar for every can I have seen on the side of the road since the west  coast, we'd never have a need for money again! It amazes me that people can be so flippant and inconsiderate to toss their cans, and other garbage, out the window of their car! But, off the soap box, I have never seen an entire farm of beer cans before. Jeff get's all the good stuff!

Did I mention rain? Sadly, those clouds that helped keep the sun off us earlier in the day, became some pretty angry storm clouds before the day was out. They caused us to pack it in a bit earlier than expected, simply because of the thunderstorms. Still, about 40 miles I think. Not bad.....

That all left the sky on fire! It was an amazing sunset!

Today was a dry day for mailboxes. There was only one of note, but it is a pretty good one!
